If you know me, you know I'm a data nerd. I love to collect all of it. But I've learned that more data doesn't always mean better instruction. Sometimes it just means more to sort through.
So I started asking a different question: if I could only collect one data point for every student, what would it be?
For me, it's oral reading fluency. In one to two minutes of listening to a student read, I get a clear benchmark, and I get to hear how they read. What kind of errors are they making?
That one quick read tells me where to start. And once I know where to start, I don't need a different plan for every student. Individualization doesn't require an individual lesson plan for every student. It requires understanding the general need underneath what each student is struggling with. All of my students’ needs usually come down to a few targeted groups.
